There are not many differences between the male and female black-handed spider monkey. The very few differences are: The body length of the male spider monkey is 38-48 centimeters and the females body length is 42-57 centimeters. The males tail length is 63-82 centimeters while the females tail length is 75-92 centimeters. The males weigh about 9-10 kilograms while the females weigh about 6-8 centimeters. The male and female black-handed spider monkey look extremely similar. The average reproductive maturity for a female is at the age of four and the males average reproductive maturity age is five. The female black-handed spider monkey gives birth to one baby every 2-3 years and the gestation period takes about 7-8 months. Spider monkeys live high in the canopy of the rain forest. Spider monkeys live in evergreen rain forests, semi deciduous and mangrove forests, lowland rain forests to mountain forests. In these forests they live mostly in the upper canopy, preferring undisturbed high forest, almost never coming to the ground. Spider monkeys prefer wet forests rather than dry forests. Black-handed spider monkeys mainly eat ripe fruit and they less frequently eat leaves, flowers, nuts, seeds, insects arachnids and eggs. I have found the black-handed spider monkey very interesting because I hadn't heard of it before I did this project. It was really fun to be able to go to the zoo just too look at this creature.
